For over 40 years, the Center for Wooden Boats has presented a unique opportunity for people of all ages to explore outdoor maritime activities right in the heart of Seattle. Their youth programs are designed for young mariners to develop skills in leadership, observation, and decision-making. Students learn while connecting with nature and Pacific Northwest history in a hands-on, physically invigorating way! CWB youth instructors are dedicated outdoor educators, trained in on-the-water safety, first aid, CPR and skills in working with youth.

The Center for Wooden Boats supports young sailors as they develop the skills, abilities, and attitudes necessary to enjoy sailing by combining teamwork and water safety. Programs target age-appropriate skill sets and are designed to build on each other, so youth can return summer after summer to play, learn, and grow. From beginner to advanced sailing camps, each session is designed to strengthen sailing techniques, knot tying abilities, and on-the-water safety while boosting confidence and independence. Summer Sailing camps are broken up based on vessels and age.

Camp Offerings - Sailing:

• Junior Sailor (ages 5-8)
• Beginner Sailor El Toro (ages 8-11)
• Intermediate Opti Sailor (ages 8-11)
• Intro to Racing with Optimist Prams (ages 8-11)
• Beginner Sailor RS Feva (ages 11-14)
• Intermediate Sailor RS Feva (ages 11-14)
• Intro to Racing with Feva Boat (ages 11-14)

El Toros are small dinghies, with a centerboard, a mainsail, and a jib. They are a great fit for most youth and loved by adults. Fun and sporty to sail, this vessel was designed in the 1940s for use in the San Francisco Bay to teach generations of new sailors the joys of being on the water.

The RS Feva is a double-handed sailboat that allows students to experience a faster, more responsive sailboat. Beloved by families looking to build a pathway to a lifetime of sailing, RS Fevas have become a stepping-stone for sailors.

CWB also offers youth woodworking camps for the young carpenter in your life! Youth woodworking camps give each student the opportunity to create objects from their own imagination. 

Instructors provide a safe learning environment for students learning how to use hand tools effectively. Students learn how to move from ideas, to drawing, to building and crafting a vessel out of wood. Students are given the opportunity to give constructive encouragement to each other while working independently in pairs.
