Dear KidsOutAndAbout readers: One day last week, I was driving home around 7 pm when I glanced out the passenger's window and saw a stunning rainbow stretched fully across the sky, glowing in front of dark gray storm clouds that were rushing away to the east. I was approaching a stop light. Left was the way home, where various chores awaited... but right was the way to the rainbow. My husband
was driving behind me, and I knew that if I turned right, he was going to think I had lost my mind. For a split second, practicality made its case: Don’t be silly; go home, you have stuff to do. But then another question darted into my mind: Am I a person who chases rainbows, or am I not? Once I framed it that way, the answer was easy. For kids and grownups alike, this can actually be a helpful way to make all kinds of decisions. When
the moment comes to act, it helps to ask not just What do I feel like doing? but Who am I? Am I a person who tells the truth? Am I a person who helps? Am I a person who persists when times are hard? Am I a person who stops to notice the beautiful things around me? We build identity one choice at a time for our entire lives. The clearer we are about who we want to be, the easier it becomes to know what to do in the moment, to give ourselves evidence that we are, in fact, that sort
of person. I hope the kids in your world grow up thinking of themselves as people who seek what is bright and good and full of wonder. It’s our job to show them that delight is often worth the detour.

April 24: NO SCHOOL DAY - Battle of Flowers: Papier Mache? Moms say “No way!”, but the kids say “Hurray!”. Join us for a class full of fun. The kids will create papier mache plaster piñatas! This is going to be a messy good time, so please have your child dress accordingly. Please pack a nut-free lunch, snack and drink for your child each day.

The Battle of Flowers Parade is one of the few parades in the United States produced entirely by women, all of whom are volunteers. The purpose of the parade is to honor the defenders of the Alamo and Goliad and to commemorate the victory at the Battle of San Jacinto that gained Texas its independence. Spectacular flower covered floats with participants adorned in colorful costumes, giant helium balloons, horse-drawn carriages, antique cars, uniformed military, colorful cavalcades, and thousands of students in marching bands, vanguards, and pep squads have come to entertain the crowds for the past 133 years.

“A Night In Old San Antonio®” (NIOSA®) is a four-night festival in the heart of downtown San Antonio that celebrates the city’s diverse cultural legacy for more than 85,000 revelers annually. Hosted by the Texas State University chapter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and the San Marcos Public Library, our festival aims to bridge the gap between the university and our local community. Through engaging activities and interactive exhibits, we hope to demonstrate that math is more than just a subject—it's an integral part of the world around us. Get ready to dive into a world of mathematical wonder with a variety of games and challenges, including "Skyscrapers" and "Cup Stacking," as well as intriguing puzzles like the "Four Color Challenge." We’ll have various participating organizations, including SIAM, hosting booths with activities tailored to math enthusiasts ages 5 and above.

Artsy smartsy! Join us every Sunday from 3-4 pm for our Artist workshop, designed for learners ages 6 years and older. During these workshops, DoSeum educators will lead Guests through artistic projects that may include known artistic techniques, art in STEAM, and self-expression.
