Looking for something creative and enriching for your child during school breaks? The Albany Institute of History & Art offers hands-on art programs where young artists can explore the museum’s galleries and create their own works inspired by the exhibitions and collection. Founded in 1791, the Albany Institute is one of the oldest museums in the United States and is home to art and artifacts that tell the story of the Hudson Valley and beyond. Through the museum’s youth programs, children experience the museum as a place to learn, experiment, and connect with others through creativity.

During April spring break, April 7–10, students ages 6–12 are invited to join the popular Vacation Art Break workshops led by museum educators. This year’s theme, Flowers Blooming in Paintings, looks at how artists across time—from Ancient Egyptian artisans carving lotus flowers to Hudson River School painters and modernist artist Blanche Lazzell—have depicted nature. Students will create their own floral still lifes through painting, printmaking, and carving while discovering how artists use different mediums to express ideas.

Looking ahead to summer, the Artful Mornings program returns August 4–28, offering a different creative theme each week. Young artists ages 6–12 explore topics ranging from the ways artists depict nature and light to the history of Albany and even the design of their own board games inspired by the museum’s collections. Each session combines gallery exploration with hands-on artmaking and encourages curiosity, collaboration, and creative thinking.

Programs are offered in age-specific sessions for ages 6–8 and 9–12. 

• Students ages 9–12 participate in three-day sessions from 9 am–12pm each day. Cost per student is $90 or $65 for Albany Institute members. 
• Students ages 6–8 participate in single-day sessions from 9 am–12 pm. Cost per student is $30 or $25 for Albany Institute members. 

All materials and museum admission are included, and students enjoy a snack break and plenty of time to experiment with art supplies—please dress for mess!
